    Description

US Army troops deployed to Vietnam in the early 1960s in uniforms better suited for the parade ground than the vicious guerrilla war awaiting them. They wore sateens before jungle fatigues were introduced, although the two uniforms were worn side by side for the rest of the war. This US Army Vietnam 5TH ID + MACV COMBAT BADGED SATEEN FATIGUE SHIRT is in excellent condition, with stitch holes and a faint shadow at the left shoulder where a MACV patch once was, some light brownish soiling at the front left cuff, some light "browning" around the inner collar, some bluish ink staining at the interior left chest, the right half of the nomenclature tag at the interior lower left front having come unstitched, and with some light scattered age wear evident (ALL pictured). Otherwise, the shirt is in excellent shape, with no other damage to the crisp OD 100% cotton sateen construction. Most interestingly, it bears a full color US made cut edge 5th Infantry Division patch at the left shoulder, carries a full color US made cut edge Military Assistance Command Vietnam (MACV) patch at the right shoulder, and is adorned with a full color woven "U.S. ARMY" tab and custom machine embroidered on twill "AMEZQUITA" name tape at the left and right chest, respectively, along with full color embroidered on twill Spec 5 chevrons at the sleeves. A right shoulder patch in the US Army is a battle patch, signifying that the wearer served in that particular unit while it saw combat. Specialist Amezquita served in the 80th Transportation Detachment stationed at Soc Trang Army Airfield in South Vietnam during the late 1960s; his unit provided hangar maintenance and support personnel to the 121st Assault Helicopter Company. The 80th was under the command of MACV, and also flew missions to retrieve vital parts for the choppers. The shirt is a Size 14 1/2 x 32, features the traditional single exposed button flap closure chest pockets, and dates to ca. 1965 by the "DSA-1" contract number on the original nomenclature tag inside. It sports all of the original flat rimmed OD plastic buttons throughout, and is a beautiful example of a rare, original US Army Vietnam 5TH ID + MACV COMBAT BADGED SATEEN FATIGUE SHIRT. Now celebrating over 20 years on eBay.
