    Description

    A hand painted 1920s gouache, watercolor and crayon drawing from French artist Bernard de Guinhald. This mixed media piece depicts a woman seated in a garden behind tile roofed stone buildings in a French mountain village.
    It is artist signed in the lower right and the image measures approx. 9 1/2 x 12 inches. It is drawn and painted on watermarked "INGRES" laid paper that has been tipped to a sheet of old gray/green cardstock. The reverse of the mount bears a sticker with an accession number as well as a an unclear collection stamp with another number. This drawing was acquired in the early 1980s with a group of works on paper from the library of the Alliance Francais in New York. Aside from age toning it is in excellent condition.
    Bernard de Guinhald (1892-1979) was a French landscape painter, graphic artist and is a highly collected poster artist, from 1926 he regularly exhibited in the Salon des Indépendants in Paris, and he was active in area of La Turbie / Alpes-Maritimes. (source: Benezit and Vollmer)
