Magnificent Schipperke dog Painting, Reuben Ward BinksSCHIPPERKEE HEADSTUDY
REUBEN WARD BINKS
This is the most prized piece that I have in the DOGCRAZY COLLECTION. For more than 20 years "Noel" has been hung in a place of prominence in all my homes. Reuben Ward Binks has always been among my all-time favorite dog artists. The photos I show here don't begin to do the dog justice. While Noel looks pretty good in the photos, it can't compare with the magnificence of seeing Binks' many brush strokes. I freely confess that I have been in love with Noel since the first moment I laid eyes on the painting. If someone does buy this, I'll probably have to leave the house while my husband packs it up and takes it away. I just think it will be too traumatic to be there when Noel leaves.
BELIEVED TO BE THE ONLY BINKS PAINTING OF A SCHIPPERKE
This is a magnificent headstudy of a Schipperke, named Noel, by famed dog artist Reuben Ward BInks. It was painted in 1936 and is done in gouache (transparent watercolor). The dog is believed to be AMERICAN CANADIAN CHAMPION AMBASSADOR O' THE NORTH, owned by Mrs. Geraldine Rockefeller Dodge.
The Official Book of the Schipperke,
published in 1976, talks about this dog on page 56:
"Another single entry of note was campaigned by Mrs. Geraline R. Dodge, Giralda Farms, in New Jersey: Ch. Ambassador o' the North, bred by Mrs. Ellen Brown of Canada, which piled up a record of 22 BB and several Group placings including one Group FIRST in 1937."
The painting is 9 x 12 and has been professionally framed. The frame appears to be gold painted wood, but I could be wrong. I have not opened it up, but it appears to be triple matted. There is a brass plate which reads: "Noel" by Rueben Ward Binks 1936. There is a small amount of residue on the bottom of the frame where the auction tag was affixed. There is some foxing on the background of the painting, but it doesn't detract from the incredible head study. Shortly after I obtained the piece, I spoke with an antique painting restorer who informed me that the foxing could be corrected for 0-150.
