    Description

    Ken Auster (1949-2016)
    Silkscreen / Serigraph AP 2/40
    Caribbean 1985
Raised in Long Beach, California Ken Auster established a reputation as the surfer's artist having designed and made surfer style tee shirts in silkscreen for many years in both Hawaii and California. In that tradition this is a fully embellished silkscreen serigraph. It is the Artist Proof, the 2nd in a very small edition of 40. Hand signed and numbered by Ken in lower margin. It is a large piece. Please compare with similars.
Not long after this work Ken began to paint plein air exclusively in oil with a widening of his subject matter. His legacy includes paintings of cafes, train stations, airports, street scenes, restaurants and of course the beach his first love.
I spoke at length with Mike E., Ken's best friend, in Laguna Beach, California recently while he was building an experimental body board. He immediately recognized this painting as British Virgin Islands,
Caribbean in 1985. It is of beached boats with surfers in the background. Signed lower right and identified as an AP 2/40 lower left. Ken travelled the world with Mike surfing and painting.
About this time Ken had moved to Laguna Beach and although he remained dedicated to his art he continued to surf several hours a day.
Painting is incredibly presented. Framed with a stunning five mats and a linen liner. The original gallery knew the importance of this piece. Exposed measures an impressive 19" by 26". Frame measures a very large approx. 32" by 40".
