    Description

This is an original 11" x 9" watercolor brushed over his own lithograph, and his original signature at the center bottom.  John Colt (
    1925-1999)
is a famous painter and college professor at UW Milwaukee, who developed his unique style of painting curious abstracted delicate images of pond life, insects, tiny reptiles and plants.  For his canvases he would paint with the canvas flat on the floor or table, allowing the delicate colors of watercolor paint to gradually settle into the canvas, eliminating brush strokes and causing gentle gradations of dark color to light.  His sketching techniques were subtle, brisk suggestions of subjects, often hard to discern, but usually based on real objects...living things.  This work includes these methods"  1. He created a print (ostensibly a stone lithograph), printed in black ink. 2. He used his pastel delicate palette to wash paint on to the paper, building the suggestions of forms. 3. He added, seen at the bottom center, his actual signature, hand written, also
appears.  The subjects are mysterious.  There are two multicolored sea shells at the bottom flanking left and right, and above 4 similar objects that are harder to define...perhaps mushrooms or the head and neck of a sea creature of some sort.  He painted subtle white areas surrounding those 4 objects.  The piece is framed in brushed aluminum, ready to hang.
