    Description

This is a beautiful and rare Antique Mid Century Black African American Modern oil painting portrait on artist’s board, by Milwaukee Wisconsin painter Louise Friedlander. This work depicts a beautiful young black woman in a red dress, gazing downward thoughtfully with a subtle smile on her face. She wears a silken veil on her head, possibly preparing for her wedding day. This piece is framed in a very cool Mid Century Modern frame with inset mirrored edges. Unfortunately the top piece on inlaid mirror is missing (please see photos.) An exhibition label affixed to the back of the artwork reads: “The Milwaukee Art Institute Thirteenth Annual Exhibition of Wisconsin Art, April 2 to May 2, 1943. Friedlander, Louise. No. 247. Title: LACE VEIL.” This is definitely the work of a talented Wisconsin artist, and to depict an African American as the subject for your artwork in 1943 was a very bold and powerful decision. Artworks depicting African Americans in the 1940’s are not very common, and I specifically seek such works out to offer for sale, so that the world may appreciate and enjoy them. I could not find much information on Louise Friedlander. Perhaps you recognize the artist? Approximately 25 3/4 x 29 5/8 inches (including frame.) Actual artwork is approximately 20 x 24 inches.
