a Good Bridge Down
The bridge has presided in grimy
solemnity over London since 183'1.
In the drawing below it spans the
desert waters at Lake Havasu City.
London Bridge at last is coming
down, but only for a while. Like
those great arks of empire, the
Queen Elizabeth and the Queen
Mary, the bridge is being taken to
America to serve as a tourist catch-
er. It will go up on dry land in the
middle of the Arizona desert, and
then an artificial river, "The Little
Thames," will run beneath it.
An ignominious fate, perhaps,
but then the old bridge was not
holding up very well. For years it
has been sinking at the rate of
one-eighth inch a year into the
bed of the Thames, and its 35-
foot-wide carriageway was far too
narrow for modern traffic. So its
rough-hewn granite siding has
been sold for ,460,000 to the
McCulloch Oil Corporation, which
will rebuild it at a resort called
Lake Havasu City near the Colora-
do River. Meanwhile, back on the
original Thames, a new bridge will
rise—at least the third since a rude
wooden one fell down in 1014.
